I love teaching algebra! This video looks at introducing the language of algebra. All those stupid terms made up by Barry. Pronumeral, variable, constant, expression, equation, coefficient, sum, product, quotient, difference and so much more. I love to use a story which includes kissing, prison guards and bunk beds to show that algebra isn't that hard! It can be funny and fun. Worked examples will help you understand what I mean ... and the difference in my teaching!
I love teaching algebra and this is the next video in the Year 8 series looking at substitution and equivalence. We know, if we watch sport, that substitution means to take something off and put something of equal value in its place. This is what it means in Mathematics too! I spend time, in my own unique way, looking at using kissy kissy and other stories to show how simple substitution can be. I then look at what equivalence means with lots of worked examples. If you want to understand algebra, then you really need to watch this series of videos! You'll never forget them!
I love teaching algebra. Building on the previous lessons in this series, I look at adding and subtracting terms. Looking at whether you can add apples and bananas together is a great springboard into teaching like terms. It really helps when we then move onto apple-bananas and banana-apples! Don't even get me started with square apples adding to square bananas! Using my own unique style to teach the algebra, here is this video with lots of worked examples to make anyone a boss of this topic.
This is another video in this awesome series on Algebra at a Year 8 level. Looking at multiplying and dividing terms, I break down the idea of using expanded form (and lots of kissy kissy's) to reorder and make the concept of multiplying terms much, much easier! I then move onto division and show how we can use the idea of anything divided by itself being one to make cancelling terms much easier too. There are lots of worked examples and the theory is presented in my own unique way.
This is the next video in the Algebra series at a Year 8 level looking at adding and subtracting algebraic fractions! I am sure your heart has already skipped a beat when you read the word fractions ... much less adding the word algebra into it!! But I've got your back here. I show you through basic examples (which get harder!) how to add fractions with numbers and then how it stays the same with algebra. There are lots of worked examples all explained in an easy to understand way.
