This is the first video in the series for General Mathematics. Looking at Order of Operations we recap some of the work which will have been taught in past years of your Mathematics education. Using BIDMAS (or BODMAS) I explain why we use it and how to use it using a range of examples. The theory is clear and easy to understand.
This is the next video in the General Maths series. Looking at Directed Numbers I spend some time explaining what directed numbers are and how we can use number lines to express them. I then look at how we can add, subtract, multiply and divide the directed numbers and the rules we need to apply when doing so. There are lots of worked examples all backed by easy to understand and clear theory.
Here is another video in this General Maths series this time looking at Powers and Roots. What are powers? What are roots? Is there only the square root? There are lots of powers and lots of roots and this video does what it can to explain what they are and how to use them. There are lots of worked examples all backed by easy to understand and clear theory with a little humour thrown in for good measure.
This videos looks at why we need to approximate and how we can use different methods to find approximations. I look at Usain Bolts time of 9.58 and wonder if that was his actual time. I show how to round to a certain number of decimal places. I look at significant figures. I have lots of worked examples all explained using clear and easy to understand theory. This is another video as part of the General Maths Units 1 and 2 course.
This video - part of the General Maths series - looks at how to convert from one set of units into another. Looking primarily at lengths, areas and volumes there are a number of worked examples which show how to convert between areas in different units, lengths in different units and volumes in different units. Errata: There are two worked examples where I have (rather stupidly) used the wrong conversions. I have updated the downloadable notes to show the correct working out! Some Guru I am :) and :(
This video looks at the basics of percentages. I look at what a percentage is an what we use it for. How to express fractions and decimals as percentages and how to express percentages as fractions and decimals. I look at finding percentages of things and how to use the CAS to find percentages too. Lots of worked examples all explained using easy to understand and clear theory.
Those pesky varmints are back again ... percentages! But, unlike previous. years, they seem a lot easier to understand. Well, they will after you've watched this video! I take a look at how to increase and decrease by a percentage and how to find the percentage increase (or decrease) between two quantities. All in my quirky style and with lots of worked examples and CAS instructions to make sure you do well in every test and exam. You've tried the rest, now try me. Trust me. I've got your back.
Ths is another video in this introductionary chapter for the Year 11 General Maths course. Having looked at a lot of the basics of Mathematics which will be used throughout the rest of the course, I am now going to spend a short amount of time looking at Ratio and Proportion. What is a ratio? What does it mean by proportion? How do I express a ratio? These are all questions which are answered. There are a number of worked examples which I use to explain the theory in a clear and easy to understand way.
This is the next video in the Unit 1 and 2 course for General Mathematics. I take a look at what it means by Unitary method. Unit means one and so we look at how we can find the price of one unit of something and how this can help us decide if something is a best buy or not. There are a number of worked examples which are used to explain the theory in a clear and easy to understand way.
