General Mathematics Units 1 and 2 are designed to suit a wide range of interests and prepare you for VCE General Mathematics Units 3 and 4. These units build on assumed skills and knowledge needed for further study in mathematics.
In Unit 1, you will study four key areas: Data Analysis, Probability and Statistics; Algebra, Number and Structure; Functions, Relations and Graphs; and Discrete Mathematics. You will learn to apply processes involving arithmetic with rational and real numbers, algebraic manipulation, equations, graphs, matrices, and geometric constructions.
In Unit 2, the focus remains on Data Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, and Functions, Relations and Graphs, but also includes Space and Measurement. You will further develop your skills with diagrams, networks, spatial reasoning, and other problem-solving techniques.
Across both units, you are expected to use mental strategies, written methods, and digital tools confidently. You will engage with mathematical modelling, estimation, and computation, and apply technology—such as graphing software, spreadsheets, or calculators—for numerical, symbolic, statistical, financial, and geometric tasks in both learning and assessment contexts.
The award of satisfactory completion for a unit is based on whether the student has demonstrated achievement of the set of outcomes specified for the unit. Teachers should use a variety of learning activities and assessment tasks that provide a range of opportunities for students to demonstrate the key knowledge and key skills in the outcomes.
All assessments at Units 1 and 2 are school-based. Procedures for assessment of levels of achievement in Units 1 and 2 are a matter for school decision.
For this unit students are required to demonstrate achievement of three outcomes. As a set these outcomes encompass the areas of study in the unit.
